Subject: Translation internship at FaustTranslationsOctober 13th, 2020 by Christian Faust - Posted in English
Students are required by many universities to complete internships related to their studies. The field of translation is no different in this respect. Unfortunately, there are few companies that offer such positions.
Practical experience really counts
At FaustTranslations we know how important real practical experience is and how we all started in a small way. That is why we work closely with a number of universities including universities of applied sciences in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and France to support students.
Above all, the aim is to give newcomers to the profession a useful orientation in everyday working life and to familiarize them with the working methods and tools that are used on a daily basis. Last but not least, things like constantly changing customer requirements, urgent delivery deadlines and the impeccable quality of translations pose special challenges that cannot really be experienced during their formal education.
Covid-19 has now presented us all with unexpected new challenges. But thanks to innovative technology which we have at FaustTranslations, we have been able to quickly create the conditions where we could set up and offer remote internships, which is something that has been welcomed by several universities.
Ms. Katharina Rues, who is studying Translation Studies at the University of Heidelberg, is now the first student to complete her remote internship with us. Here is her evaluation:
How did you like the internship?
“I really enjoyed the internship. I was involved in everything and never had the feeling of being “just an intern” or only getting the tasks that no one else wanted to do. So I always felt that I was taken seriously and also had the impression that I was being allowed to work independently. The way that you work together as peers at FaustTranslations is something I have rarely come across elsewhere.”
What was not so good, what was missing?
“There was really nothing that was missing in my internship with you 😊. I would have liked to have been there in person, but at the present moment, of course, nobody could do anything about that.”
What was the most important thing you learned?
“It was generally important for me to see how translation projects work in practice, with editing, translation, revision, etc.”
What is your experience with Smartcat?
“I think Smartcat is great, I liked it much better than Trados. I found it to be very straight forward, and it practically explains itself.”
“And another thing that I would like to mention is that ☝I think it is super cool that you have switched to a paperless working environment. When I see the paper waste everywhere it makes me mad 😄😣”
